Online Therapy

Convenient and comfortable access to effective and qualified therapists

What is Teletherapy?

Teletherapy, also known as online therapy/counselling, E-Counselling, or video conferencing refers to any counselling or psychotherapy provided via technology or virtual platforms.  Some examples of teletherapy include:

  • doing therapy sessions over the phone
  • having a group chat for group therapy
  • using videoconferencing for individual, couples, or group therapy
  • receiving therapy via email or instant messenger
  • using apps that connect clients to therapists and offer therapy within the app

One of the most common forms of teletherapy used is videoconference.  Videoconference sessions have increased in popularity recently as they are often more accessible and closely mimic traditional in-person therapy.

The effectiveness of teletherapy is dependent on the individual/couple/family and the reason they are seeking counselling. There is growing evidence to suggest that teletherapy, when used with qualified counsellors is just as effective for treating various disorders and concerns as traditional in person counselling.

Great Lakes Counselling offers clients the option to complete their counselling sessions in person, over the phone or via secure video conferencing and messaging. All options are compliant with Ontario’s Privacy Health Information Act (PHIPA).

A failure is not a mistake, it may simply be the best one can do under the circumstances. The real mistake is to stop trying.

Benefits of Teletherapy

  • Accessible: Some individuals are unable to access traditional therapy due to physical disabilities, geographic location, or lack of counsellors in the area.

  • Effective: Users of quality teletherapy report high satisfaction with treatment.

  • Convenience: People can access therapy in a location that suits them and some individuals are more comfortable using technology to communicate.

  • Flexible: Reduces the likelihood of scheduling conflicts and reduces wait times for service.

  • Health: Teletherapy allows people to get treatment at home without risking the spread of infection during epidemics and pandemics.
  • Privacy: People who choose teletherapy do not have to sit in busy waiting rooms but can seek treatment in the privacy of their own homes. For some, this alleviates privacy concerns.
